Summary

This essential authorized biography of Eugene Peterson offers unique insights into the experiences and spiritual convictions of the iconic American pastor and beloved translator of The Message。

"In the time of a generation-wide breakdown in trust with leaders in every sphere of society, Eugene's quiet life of deep integrity and gospel purpose is a bright light against a dark backdrop。"--John Mark Comer, author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

"This hunger for something radical--something so true that it burned in his bones--was a constant in Eugene's life。 His longing for God ignited a ferocity in his soul。"

Encounter the multifaceted life of one of the most influential and creative pastors of the past half century with unforgettable stories of Eugene's lifelong devotion to his craft and love of language, the influences and experiences that shaped his unquenchable faith, the inspiration for his decision to translate The Message, and his success and struggles as a pastor, husband, and father。

Author Winn Collier was given exclusive access to Eugene and his materials for the production of this landmark work。 Drawing from his friendship and expansive view of Peterson's life, Collier offers an intimate, beautiful, and earthy look into a remarkable life。

For Eugene, the gifts of life were inexhaustible: the glint of fading light over the lake; a kiss from his wife, Jan; a good joke; a bowl of butter pecan ice cream。 As you enter into his story, you'll find yourself doing the same--noticing how the most ordinary things shimmer with a new and unexpected beauty。

“Eugene said nothing original, no radiating insight, but he welcomed me into a sphere that I can describe only as immensely human and profoundly holy。”What a legacy to leave behind。

I think I want to visit Montana。 I wish I was given the gift of meeting him in person。 I do enjoy reading the Message。

A wonderful book about one of the most beautiful servants of God in our time。 Peterson’s scholarship and pastoral presence have had a deep impact on my own ministry。 Winn Collier writes a very moving and intimate portrait of Peterson that gives his life story in war that helps you feel as if you really know him。 His biblical and counter cultural life that takes ordinary people seriously is an inspiration。

Really enjoyed this book。 Such an interesting and compelling man, who truly served God according to his convictions。 Although I don’t agree with everything he believed, I was encouraged by the lives he and his life lived for their Savior。

I knew nothing about Eugene Peterson but was recommended this biography。 In some way, I kept waiting for the part of Peterson’s story that was going to be outstanding or noteworthy, but realized about halfway through, that this was exact opposite of his legacy。 At a time when the American church became consumed by capitalism and the mega church trend, Peterson was a quiet voice trying to get back to the simplicity of the gospel, the local church, and pastoring people you really know。 I found I e I knew nothing about Eugene Peterson but was recommended this biography。 In some way, I kept waiting for the part of Peterson’s story that was going to be outstanding or noteworthy, but realized about halfway through, that this was exact opposite of his legacy。 At a time when the American church became consumed by capitalism and the mega church trend, Peterson was a quiet voice trying to get back to the simplicity of the gospel, the local church, and pastoring people you really know。 I found I especially appreciated his views on his marriage and family—that these were aspects of his life that he knew held major significance but that he often had to fight to make the proper space for them。 Definitely interested in reading Peterson’s work first hand now。 4 stars because at times I just didn’t connect with the authors writing, maybe felt too flowery or too bogged down in insignificant details? 。。。more

Collier did a great job showing us who Peterson was。 A biography filled with humor, sorrow and honesty。

I have really enjoyed the writings of Eugene Peterson and once in the '90s was able to audit a course of his with my wife Joyce at Regent College。 My reading of The Pastor, his autobiography, confirmed my own pastoral heart in all the ministries I've had over the years。 I read this book out loud to Joyce and it was good to share together and discuss aspects of Eugene's life。 I really appreciated the honesty and openness of Win Collier who knew Eugene well。 This gave us a view of this special god I have really enjoyed the writings of Eugene Peterson and once in the '90s was able to audit a course of his with my wife Joyce at Regent College。 My reading of The Pastor, his autobiography, confirmed my own pastoral heart in all the ministries I've had over the years。 I read this book out loud to Joyce and it was good to share together and discuss aspects of Eugene's life。 I really appreciated the honesty and openness of Win Collier who knew Eugene well。 This gave us a view of this special godly man with both his strengths and weaknesses。 One takeaway for me is to learn more the joy of silence and presence in relating to Jesus and to people。 Eugene modeled this kind of a life。 。。。more

This may have just become one of my all-time favorite books。 Never have I felt so seen and so un-alone as I have in reading about Eugene Peterson。 I feel a kinship that I will never be able to fully express。 Finally, someone who I think would at least somewhat understand me。 And through his work, I better understand God, as well。 I also embrace the mystery。

I’ve been burned out on “christian living” type books, so I figured that a Christian biography would provide some nice reflection/encouragement with less of the didactic “how to”, “do this, don’t do that” type stuff。 I had heard lots of good things about this book, and I’m glad I picked it up。 It was really nice to get to know Eugene through this book; it seems we shared a lot of similar thoughts, and it was refreshing to hear about his lifelong pursuit of humility and obscurity。 This was also a I’ve been burned out on “christian living” type books, so I figured that a Christian biography would provide some nice reflection/encouragement with less of the didactic “how to”, “do this, don’t do that” type stuff。 I had heard lots of good things about this book, and I’m glad I picked it up。 It was really nice to get to know Eugene through this book; it seems we shared a lot of similar thoughts, and it was refreshing to hear about his lifelong pursuit of humility and obscurity。 This was also a particularly well written biography: it was structured and written a way that read more like a story and less like a list of events/accomplishments in the subject’s life (as some other biographies have)。 [Read February 2022] 。。。more

Moving, hope-filled and deeply inspiring - you sense Eugene's presence, integrity, mysticism and stillness and you feel like you're in an intimate conversation with Eugene himself reading the pages of his journals and letters。 A book I know I will reread again。 Moving, hope-filled and deeply inspiring - you sense Eugene's presence, integrity, mysticism and stillness and you feel like you're in an intimate conversation with Eugene himself reading the pages of his journals and letters。 A book I know I will reread again。 。。。more

EnlighteningWhat a life gently unraveled of the humble yet brilliant people's pastor。 The scholarly and approachable writings of Eugene Peterson are displayed within context of a man always looking for the divine presence within the fragile and fallible human journey。 EnlighteningWhat a life gently unraveled of the humble yet brilliant people's pastor。 The scholarly and approachable writings of Eugene Peterson are displayed within context of a man always looking for the divine presence within the fragile and fallible human journey。 。。。more

“Eugene believed that the Bible often offered less clarity than we want—or at least not the kind of clarity we want。”Winn spoke to so much LIFE, good, hard and messy。 Learning about Eugene’s life as more than a translator was such a gift。 I also wish that my grandparents and my friends’ were so fastidious in journaling and letter saving that Winn could write their stories too。

Steph

I wish I could have know this man when he was alive!

I did not know much about Eugene Peterson other than he translated The Message, which I did not esteem highly。 This book has made me reconsider my stance on this translation and makes me want to read other books he wrote。 Eugene Peterson lived such a winsome life as a preacher and writer and I loved his relationship with his wife, bumps and all。

I did not know anything about the life of Eugene Peterson, translator for The Message。 Winn Collier does an outstanding job of pulling together a mountain of information into a beautiful story of this man's life journey and Christian walk-his struggles and triumphs。 I would highly recommend especially for book groups。 Many issues to discuss。 I did not know anything about the life of Eugene Peterson, translator for The Message。 Winn Collier does an outstanding job of pulling together a mountain of information into a beautiful story of this man's life journey and Christian walk-his struggles and triumphs。 I would highly recommend especially for book groups。 Many issues to discuss。 。。。more

It would be hard to overstate the inspiration of an extraordinary life lived in a faithfully quiet way。 Thank you Mr。 Peterson, I look forward to sitting in silence with you in heaven one day。

One of the best Christian biographies I have read。 I loved the progression of Eugene through his life and the groundedness he displayed。 It is not a one sided everything is good biography, which is a little more real。 I have loved Mr。 Peterson's books over the past few years and everything written about his life here seems congruent with the words he wrote。 The last chapter was deeply moving and I am saddened that sometimes Christians can be as harsh, if not harsher with people we disagree with, One of the best Christian biographies I have read。 I loved the progression of Eugene through his life and the groundedness he displayed。 It is not a one sided everything is good biography, which is a little more real。 I have loved Mr。 Peterson's books over the past few years and everything written about his life here seems congruent with the words he wrote。 The last chapter was deeply moving and I am saddened that sometimes Christians can be as harsh, if not harsher with people we disagree with, than any regular social media commentator。 Surely a pastor of the people who in lifetime conversation with God sought to worship and be his hands in building the kingdom of God。 Mr。 Peterson was not someone who craved celebrity and I am grateful for his work and have been the beneficiary for reading about his life。 。。。more

I felt so taken in by Eugene Peterson’s intense desire for God’s presence, by his monastic ways, his wisdom, and his contemplative nature。 Winn Collier does a beautiful job drawing the reader in to experience Peterson, flaws and all。 There’s much to admire about the way he pastored and the way he and Jan unhurriedly nurtured so many that spent time in their home。

Freddy Lam

Well written and touching, it made me wish I knew Eugene and sit in the presence of silence and see God in his life! Thank you。
